WCPSS – At a Loss for Learning

Parents and Voters not happy with K-12 Education in NC

A June 2021 Cygnal poll of likely North Carolina voters found that:

  • 55% believe education is on the wrong track.
  • 69% of parents believe education is on the wrong track.
  • 73% of parents say schools have become more political over the last five years.

If the same poll were conducted today, one could assume even greater disapproval among parents and voters given the negative effects of prolonged closures, rigid mask mandates, and the Wake County School Board’s decision to ignore learning loss.

Why does the Wake County School Board continue to ignore learning loss? Why does the NCAE president tweet that “learning loss is a false construct”? The answer – they do not care about ACTUAL academic performance and growth in Wake County.

Every policy decision, every curriculum choice, every program instituted by this board has been done in the pursuit of an academic theory; a political concept; the pursuit of power and influence. Current WCPSS leadership does not address learning loss – – they, in fact, actively petitioned against grading standards this year. They do not acknowledge statistical declines in academic performance, especially among low-income and minority students, and the board maligns, ignores and alienates parents who challenge their damaging policy decisions.

Family engagement is the number one indicator of a child’s educational success. When elected, I will repair the trust of voters and parents by:

  • making lesson plans available to parents in advance about what’s taught in classrooms. This will increase parental involvement in the day-to-day education of our children while also giving parents the confidence that academic performance and growth are prioritized.
  • re-instituting after-school learning programs the board canceled earlier this year.
  • ending mandatory lockdowns and harmful mandates stunting the academic, emotional and social growth of our children.
  • cutting unnecessary programs and redirect those funds towards resources for families of special education students who have been totally ignored by this school board.

Wake County has the budget and resources to give our kids a world class education, but instead politics and refusal to address significant issues is leaving kids behind. As your school board member, I’ll be a voice for all parents, and all students to make sure trust and results are restored.
