Parental Power

Wake County Parents Power

Studies show that parental involvement is the #1 indicator for a child’s success in school. The Wake School board has alienated parents, censored parental engagement and shut down parental involvement for years. The history of parental alienation, especially over the last two years, should never be allowed. It is the primary reason for falling academics in WCPSS.

  • REASSIGNMENTS: Entire neighborhoods fought for years against senseless reassignments that favored new housing developments and magnet school enrollment. Many families left Wake County because of it, and Lindsay Mahaffey was forced to apologize to families during a 2020 candidate forum
  • MVP MATH: Thousands of parents led the charge against the MVP Math curriculum. Their pleas fell on deaf ears, as Lindsay Mahaffey stood by and did nothing. Now, less than 50% of students are proficient in Math by the 3rd grade in Wake County.
  • CLASSROOMS: Parents were not allowed in classrooms throughout the two years of the pandemic even after schools reopened for in-person learning.
  • ENROLLMENT: Parental alienation caused a significant drop in student enrollment. Enrollment is not projected to return to pre-pandemic levels until 2030.
  • HEALTH: Multiple complaints were filed against WCPSS for denial of legal and lawful mask exemptions. WCPSS virtually ignored the mental health crisis.
  • BOARD MEETINGS: Lindsay Mahaffey’s first act as Chair was to reduce the attendance numbers for School Board meetings, in an attempt to silence parental complaints.

When elected, I will:

  • bring back parental access to classrooms for observation and volunteering.
  • restore and repair the parent-teacher relationship.
  • ensure notification of any medical services given to students.
  • safeguard parental choice on mask wearing
  • no forced mandates.
  • implement an “opt-in” versus “opt-out” policies for parental engagement.

It’s time to give schools back to the parents.
