Wake County School Board Candidate Steve Bergstrom responded today about Superintendent Truitt’s refusal to address accusations of fraud on the Wake County School Board:
“Today North Carolina Superintendent Catherine Truitt informed the media she would not be acting on our request to investigate the Wake County School Board for negligence in the appointment of Craston Artis for the District 4 seat. We were disappointed Superintendent Truitt ignored our letter and instead responded to the media, which is unbecoming of a public servant. In my letter I indicated this wasn’t just a request from me, but of many in the community who feel like their school board members are elite, and answer to no one even in the face of corruption.
“The impropriety of Chair Lindsay Mahafeey was acknowledged by many on the school board, leading them to make official provisions to prevent Mahaffey or anyone else in the future from having secret conversations with appointee candidates. The residence verification piece of the application process was also changed, since there was no due diligence on the part of Chair Mahaffey to ensure residents actually lived in the district, or even the county.
“So what we have is a self-governing board, and a Superintendent of Schools who turns a blind eye to corruption in the state’s largest school district. The voters of Wake County know now we have no support from Superintendent Truitt who provided zero guidance on how to proceed, and lacked the courtesy to answer our letter or respond to evidence regarding a public official fixing a political appointment. She left the citizens of Wake County to address this on our own, and we will.”
Chip in today and help give schools back to parents.
